In-Patient Accommodation, Monitoring & Welfare Standards

This module covers all requirements for the safe and effective hospitalisation of patients, including accommodation, monitoring, overnight care, species segregation, and documentation standards across Core, General Practice and Veterinary Hospital accreditation.

What This Module Covers
​

Module 8 ensures practices can provide appropriate in-patient care through:

  • Suitable kennelling and accommodation

  • Safe handling and transfer of patients

  • Adequate nursing support and overnight supervision

  • Species-appropriate facilities

  • Monitoring, record keeping and welfare standards

Below are the documents required to demonstrate compliance

Core Practices 
​

Required documents:

  • SOP for hospitalisation of very large breeds
    (only if the practice does not have an adequately sized kennel)

  • Written policy for overnight care
    (who is responsible, frequency of checks, welfare provisions)

  • Information for owners on overnight supervision
    (written explanation of whether someone is present or how often checks occur)

  • Patient transfer protocol
    (for safe handling during transport in practice vehicles)

General Practice
​

Additional required documents:

  • SOP for hospitalisation of very large breeds
    (same requirement as Core)

  • In-patient sheets, including:

    • Temperature, pulse, respiration

    • Treatments

    • Food & water intake

    • Urine & faeces output

    • Clinical signs

    • Timed and initialled entries

  • Signed owner acknowledgement
    confirming they understand the level of overnight supervision

Veterinary Hospital
​

Additional required documents:

  • Team rotas demonstrating 24-hour in-patient care

  • On-call rotas showing access to trained, experienced support

  • Protocol / checklist for handover
    (ensuring all relevant information is communicated every time)
